As the days get colder and the nights longer, we welcome in the frosty season with a series of wintry paintings by Luxembourg artists from our collection.
We kick off with a stunning vista by Jean Schaack from 1914. The figures, more hinted at than painted, wander across an icy landscape, a cold wind seemingly tearing at their clothes and smudging their silhouettes whilst the fiery orange of trees in late autumn blazes in the background. Our eye is drawn to the lone figure standing at the edge of what seems to be a frozen lake, taking in the scene from afar.

We continue our celebration of jumper weather and all things icy with this striking portrayal of Remich in the snow by Nico Klopp. The scene depicts the town at dusk, also known as the blue hour, as the cool indigo tones of the work suggest. The last glint of sunlight is evident in the pale pink tint of the sky and the right-hand house, casting shadows over the trees and fence before darkness envelopes the town.

Next, we consider a snowy rural scene by Jean-Pierre Beckius from 1931. A large haystack dominates the composition, its warm brown tones standing out against the pale blues and icy whites of the rest of the landscape. In agricultural terms, this time of year is historically one of rest after the busy harvest period, conveyed here by means of an empty field muffled by snow.

Finally, we give you a crisp winter morning by Dominique Lang. Painted in the style of Post-Impressionism, this stunning work from the early twentieth century delicately renders the early hours of the day in a small town. Behind an orchard of blue-tinted trees and rows of snow-covered roofs, the sun slowly rises above the horizon in rays of pale pink and yellow, perfectly capturing the essence of dawn on a winter day.
