Batuco, traditional song and dance from the island of Santiago

Give way to the festivities and sounds of the Cape Verde archipelago with an age-old musical genre typical of the island of Santiago, the batuco. Traditionally performed in rural areas by women, it is essentially based on percussion, dance and song. Classified as national cultural heritage, the batuco is the expression of popular knowledge, an oral practice and a culture of identity all in one. In Luxembourg, this memory is perpetuated by the Cape Verdean group ‘terra-terra’, who will be demonstrating this ritual practice at the museum, combining poetry, voice, music and dance.
