The striking Im Wald (2020) series by the Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf (*1959), the relatively unknown large-format watercolour drawings and recent sculptures by the Belgian artist Hans Op de Beeck (*1969), and a small selection of landscape photographs by the renowned Luxembourg artist Edward Steichen (1879-1973) form the ingredients of a singular triangular exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of Steichen's death in 2023.

From 16 December 2022 to 11 June 2023, the MNHA will bring together Olaf and Op de Beeck for the first time, two artists who had never met before but who secretly admired each other's world as well as Steichen's. The exhibition will include some 37 photographs, large watercolours, sculptures, installations and videos by Erwin Olaf and Hans Op de Beeck. It is surprising to see how their works echo Steichen's landscape photography and at the same time offer a new insight into the familiar work of the Luxembourg photographer. Although very different from each other, the three artists on stage seem to interact like virtuoso musicians on their respective works, creating a new harmony, a richly varied presentation of black, white and grey images with an atmosphere all their own. At the same time, Olaf and Op de Beeck have also agreed to be the guest curators of another presentation at the MNHA: in the coming weeks they will select 20 original photographs by Edward Steichen from the museum's rich collections, which will be exhibited in our Steichen Cabinet in the first half of 2023.
