The Vichten mosaik

During earthworks on a farm in Vichten, a large Gallo-Roman villa was discovered in the spring of 1994. Excavations in spring 1995 of a small part of the structures uncovered a sumptuous polychrome mosaic.
The mosaic is made up of purely decorative elements and surrounds the spectacular central scene: Homer and the nine Muses. The central medallion, depicting Homer and one of the Muses, is surrounded by eight other medallions, each depicting one of the Muses. The eight goddesses surrounding the central medallion are arranged axially towards the middle of the central octagon.
This masterpiece is one of the finest representations of the theme of the "Nine Muses", and testifies to the patron's interest in philosophical and literary culture.
